This value is used in determining the order in which items appear in a drop-down selection field. The display order field accepts numeric values.  The higher the display order value, the higher they will appear on the employee drop-down list. 

For example:

The default display order value is zero. Duplicate display order values are acceptable. Values of 1 through 1000 are acceptable.
